My strategy

This is the strategy I have worked out to rid the deficiencies of our democratic system as much as possible

THE PROBLEM

Crises and problems everywhere on the world. Governments are overchallenged. Instead of resolving them they produce more of them. A battle against windmills which cannot be won.

The root cause of the problems has to be identified and corrected to stop them.

Most of the problems are symptoms of governments which fail. Former German chancellor and insider Helmut Schmidt got to the heart of it when he warned: „The stupidity of governments should never be underestimated.“

Status quo: stupid governments ==> stupid decisions ==> problems and crises
Objective: intelligent governments ==> intelligent decisions ==> less problems and crises

Governments act stupidly because …

1 – they don’t have a long-term target. Instead they act in the short term
2 – they cannot do better (overchallenged with often complex questions in our globalized world, onesidedly influenced by lobbyists, lack of time)
3 – they don’t want to do better (as they often are not primarily geared towards serving common interest but the interests of their party, lobbyists as well as personal interests)

THE SOLUTION
The deficiencies can be remedied by

1. Policy needs a clear defined long-term goal. This could be the answer to the question: „How do we want to live in Germany, in Europe and in the world in 2050?“
All political decisions have to be brought in line with this goal, following the principle: to think globally, to act locally.
The long-term goal would define the political course of the government, including its crash barriers.

2. Better guidance of the politicians ==> by filtering out the most intelligent solutions regarding all questions by:
Taking advantage of the immense potential of people’s knowledge / intelligence / creativity by activating and importing it into a central forum / network.

Only since a few years ago all the prerequisites are met thanks to IT, the possibility of networking and a meanwhile high connectivity.
Using this basis, in public discourses the very best solutions can be filtered out.
Every inhabitant may participate, while official as well as self-appointed ‚experts‘ and NGO’s have more voting rights.

In practice every citizen may pick out those subjects which interest him/her most in order to contribute.
Through highly focussed and structured discourses online as well as offline carefully thought out answers can be found.

The problem: The elected politicians will not necessarily put the solutions into operation which the people considers best.

3. Solution: We (the people which want to actively decide about our future) found our own party with politicians who are willing to put the people’s best ideas into operation.

Would such a party which offers better solutions than the existing parties be elected by voters who could continuously participate in political decisions instead of just having one single voting opportunity once in a term?
Voters in Germany and all other democracies are unhappy with their government’s work.
Such a BEST IDEAS FUTURE party would be the only chance for a profound change and improvement compared to what the existing parties offer.

Because of these reasons I deeply believe that people would love such a party and vote for it.

I imagine inter-connected BEST IDEAS FUTURE parties in all democratic countries all over the world, establishing suitable superior organizations which eventually would replace the UN, the World Bank and the WTO with their questionable structures.

The idea contest

I have worked out a strategy.

However, as it is more than likely that even better strategies could be found I am planning to initiate an attention-getting idea contest.
Ideas for political solutions cannot be expected from politicians as they are part of the problem. On the other side there is this enormous potential of knowledge, intelligence and creativity within the civil society. This potential should be tapped to filter out the most intelligent strategies.

The contest should be starting in Germany as to find a solution for the German democratic system.
Other countries would then follow with solutions for their specific democracies.

While a promising strategy could be adapted in countries which also have a proportional representation voting system unfortunately this is not true for the US and the UK. These countries need a quite different approach. And against the backdrop of presidential elections in the US already next year it is high time to work out an ingenious plan in order to shift public opinion and bring hope to those who would usually not vote. I am very concerned about the next US president.

DESCRIPTION OF THE IDEA CONTEST

ATTACHMENT B
The requirements of the idea competition derive from the advantages of my specific concept

The objective is a political system with governments which are based on the values of peace, social justice and respect for nature and natural resources.

Governments should

– solely take decisions which are sustainable and carefully thought out
– solely act in common interest
– follow long term objectives
– follow a policy which is edged by clearly positioned crash barriers
– thus protected against right-wing, antisemitic, intolerant and other misanthropic mindsets
– think global and act local
– pick up and resolve problems soon
– include the population in decisions as much as possible
– be protected against lobbyist’s influence as much as possible

– aim at introducing an eco-social market economy
– advocate efficient programs to make sure that there is sufficient water, food, shelter and education for all people in the world

Putting the concept into action should be possible

– without too many obstacles
– relatively short-term
– without amendments to the constitution
– peacefully
– in an orderly manner so that the political business could continue as undisturbed as possible

The solution

During the last twelve months I have worked out an actionable strategy which is able to crack the problem.

However, as it is more than likely that even better strategies could be found I am planning to initiate an attention-getting idea contest.

The problem

THE PROBLEM
More and more people in democratic countries are severely dissatisfied with their representatives who apparently are unable to cope with the challenges in our globalized world.

And today these challenges are more formidable than ever.

George Soros provided the background:

„The global governance is failing and you have all kinds of crises all over the world. They might be solvable by themselves, but actually they fester, they don’t get solved. They accumulate and they are all interconnected in a reflexive fashion, effecting the others and being affected by them. And the losers in particular crises become spoilers in the other crises and that makes it so difficult to solve them. So the world has become extremely complicated.“

But even before the world became so complex democratic elected governments took disastrous decisions which put the future for countries and their people on the wrong track, e.g.

  • the Nazis in Germany bringing terror to the world
  • US administrations starting several wars and eroding democracy as time went on
  • Western governments allowing economy to defy control through governments
  • European governments under the leadership of Germany destroying the idea of a united Europe
  • European governments being unable to cope with large numbers of refugees
  • all governments not taking environmental problems seriously enough
  • democratic governments use to take clever tactical decisions while neglecting to follow a strategy which leads to fulfilling long-term goals
  • The major problems are often entirely neglected, e.g. the necessity to dramatically reduce the consumption of oil against the backdrop of its limited availability on our planet
  • the decision to produce fuel from corn

„The stupidity of governments should never be underestimated.“
Former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt

And exactly that is the root of all evil: The vast majority of mankind’s problems are caused by ‚unwise‘ decisions taken by governments.
Therefore we urgently need to find a way to stop this vicious cycle for the sake of our future, our children’s and grandchildren’s.

Fortunately, at least in democracies it – theoretically – is in the power of the people to cause fundamental changes, in a peaceful way.
But how? Until now no workable plan has been found how to make a change happen.

What is BEST IDEAS FUTURE?

BEST IDEAS FUTURE is an initiative which targets to rid our democracies from many of their system errors so that they will do a better job in resolving problems and in preventing to a large extent that new ones are being generated continually.

Addressing the peoples‘ enormous potential of knowledge, intelligence and creativity the German public will be asked to find the very best strategy for achieving that in an idea contest.

With this initiative, Germany will be the pioneer, encouraging people in other democracies to follow.
